Holding Class Online
Choose between various live and recorded ways to teach online
Introduction
In online classes, you can choose to have live (synchronous) class at a set time where students are all online together, a recorded (asynchronous) class that students can participate in at their own pace, or a mix of both.
BYU has institutional licenses to products such as Zoom that are free for professors and students to use for meeting together online. Detailed training is available at https://go.byu.edu/zoomtraining.
Live Classes
You can choose to hold class using Zoom at the exact time class would normally meet. This allows for live interaction with students.

- Share your computer screen in Zoom (or watch the video tutorial).
For increased participation and feedback, you can create in-class quizzes and interactive lecture questions, mark attendance, and have live discussion using Top Hat. Top Hat is free to BYU professors and students. Detailed instructions are available at support.tophat.com.
Recorded Lecture
For faculty that would like assistance recording and posting lectures, Continuing Education has media rooms and support personnel available. To schedule a media room, call 801-422-4605. This service will be available starting the morning of Monday, March 16.
Record yourself presenting your lecture using Zoom, and post the resulting video in one of the following ways
- Streamed on Zoom (see Managing Cloud Recordings)
- Upload the video file to and stream from YouTube / Vimeo
- Upload to and post a link to the video file on Box.
Record short lecture “snippets” using Digital Dialog
- You can present and pose questions using Text, Video, or Audio
- You can create a discussion prompt once and share it with the Whole-Class, small groups, or with each individual for a one-on-one discussion
You can create PowerPoint Slides with narration and share them with students in the following ways:
- Post the Narrated Slides as a PowerPoint file for students to review on a Content Page or in a Digital Dialog Discussion
- Export the narrated files as an MP4 and upload to YouTube or Vimeo, then embed the video on a Content page in Learning Suite
- Post the video or PowerPoint file on Box and post a link on a Content in Learning Suite
Online Resources
Search the internet (or a teaching materials repository) for Open Educational Resources (OER) or websites that teach the same content you would have covered in your lecture. Give students specific instructions on what to review on the website; consider assigning questions they should answer as they review it.
Use alternative content options on LinkedIn Learning or Pluralsight, etc.
