The SCAI Program employs trained students to help BYU faculty navigate, integrate, and thoughtfully apply artificial intelligence in their teaching and course design

Student Consultants on Artificial Intelligence (SCAI) Program

SCAIs serve as knowledgeable peer resources, helping faculty understand the implications of AI in higher education, from assessment design and academic integrity to productivity tools and AI literacy. Unlike technical IT support, SCAIs offer pedagogical and practical guidance grounded in both academic research and hands-on experience with leading AI platforms.

Whether you are curious about AI for the first time or looking to meaningfully embed AI into your course, an SCAI consultation provides a low-stakes, faculty-centered space to explore what is possible.

SCAIs can serve in any of the following roles:

  1. AI Observer

An SCAI attends your class session, in person or online, and documents moments where AI tools could enhance instruction, streamline activities, or better engage students. A written observation report is provided after the visit.
  2. Class Focus Groups

While you briefly step out, an SCAI conducts a structured 15-minute conversation with your students about their AI use in the course, what tools they are using, how they understand the policies, and where confusion exists. A summary is shared with you afterward.
  3. Student Success Program

An SCAI reviews your syllabus for clarity around AI use expectations, academic honesty language, and alignment with BYU's evolving AI policies. Suggestions are provided to help students understand what AI-assisted work is and is not permitted in your course.
  4. Workflow Consultant

An SCAI works with you one-on-one to design practical AI-assisted workflows such as AI-generated feedback drafts, automated rubric suggestions, or course prep automation, saving time without sacrificing academic rigor.

  5. Other

You ask the SCAI for feedback and suggestions about classroom activities or particular areas of interest. The SCAI can also assist with classroom research, reflective teaching, syllabus review, etc.
