Setting Up Quiz Extensions and Assignment Accommodations in Canvas
As an instructor, you can moderate your quiz and assignment by granting extra time and extra attempts for a quiz. You can also assign an assignment to individual students and set different due and availability dates for a student within an assignment that is assigned to the rest of the class.
Give Extra Time or Attempts for a Quiz
Please note that:
- A quiz must be published before you can moderate it. If you would like to manage the quiz moderation options before allowing students to access it, set the quiz available from date to a future date, and publish the quiz. Your students will not receive a notification for an unavailable quiz. Once you’ve made timing moderations, you can unpublish the quiz to save your moderations. You can then continue to edit the quiz prior to publishing it for your students to access.
- The maximum time you can extend a current attempt is 1440 minutes (24 hours).
- When extra attempts are given via the Moderate Quiz option, Canvas keeps the highest quiz score by default. You can edit quiz scoring options to keep either the highest score, the most recent score, or an average of all scores.
Give Extra Time
To give students extra time on a quiz you will need to do TWO things.
- +Add Alternative Due Date & Start/Until time for the student(s)
- To give students extra time to complete a Quiz, you will need to set an alternative due date with a time range that accommodates the extra time you will add in Moderate This Quiz.
- Go to the Quiz and click on Edit.
- At the bottom of the page, under the "Assign to" section, click on the Add button.
- In this second box, under "Assign to", write the student's name that needs the extension. Change the Available from and until date and times to fit the time extended time range the student will need. For example, if a student will be given extra time that will total 90 minutes, make sure the time range is at least 90 minutes or more. The Until date/time is the time the exam will close regardless of time added in Moderate Quiz
- Click on Save and Publish (or Save if it's an existing assignment).
- To give students extra time to complete a Quiz, you will need to set an alternative due date with a time range that accommodates the extra time you will add in Moderate This Quiz.

Assign an Assignment to Individual Student(s) or Give Different Due Date
Note: When using differentiated assignments with the Gradebook, the assignment appears as a column for all students, but grade cells are grayed out for students who have not been included in the assignment. Grades cannot be assigned for students who have not been included in the assignment, and assignments that are not assigned to a student are not factored into overall grades.

Go to the Quiz and click on Edit.

By default, Canvas will assign your assignment to everyone in your course. To assign a different due date to an individual student, click the Add button [1]. Type the name of the student in the Assign to field [2]. Search fields are dynamic, and you can search for students by first or last name. When the full name appears, click the name. Lists are not scrollable.
Assign to Specific Student Only

To create an assignment that is assigned only to a specific student, click the Remove icon next to the Everyone label [1], then start to type the name of a student in the Assign to field [2]. Search fields are dynamic, and you can search for students by first or last name. When the full name appears, click the name. Lists are not scrollable.
You can include more than one student in the To field as long as the students are to be assigned the same due and availability dates.
Edit Due and Availability Dates

In the date fields, add your preferred date(s) with the following options:
- Due [1]: Set the date and time that the assignment is due. The due date will already be populated for you if you created an assignment shell, but you can change it if necessary.
